When operating a combination truck and trailer
CE is for large truck-trailer combinations; C1E covers medium vehicles with heavy trailers.
To drive a city bus or coach
Category D is mandatory for passenger transport vehicles with more than 8 seats.
If the bus route is under 50 km and you are 18
Drivers aged 18 can drive short-route buses without passengers or under supervision.
If the bus route is under 50 km and you are 21
Bus transport is allowed from age 21 for routes under 50 km.
When driving a bus with passengers over 50 km
Transport of passengers by bus over long distances is allowed from age 23.
If you hold a truck licence issued at 18
First-time truck licences are valid for 2 years before full validity.
If you need a professional truck licence
Finland does not issue Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC); Code 95 is not indicated.
If your licence includes category T
Category T is valid for tractors and other motorized handling equipment unless excluded.
When applying for a C1 or C licence
You must be at least 18 years old and have completed required training.
When applying for a CE licence
CE is an extension of C, allowing trailer combinations.
If applying for category D licence
For full D licence, age is 24; reduced age applies with CPC training.
To upgrade from D to DE
DE allows driving buses with heavy trailers.
If you drive a medium bus (D1)
D1 licences are for minibuses with 9–16 passenger seats.
When applying for D1 or D1E
Conditions apply for younger applicants, including vocational training.
If you are medically unfit
All truck and bus drivers must meet medical fitness standards.
If you are renewing a professional licence
Commercial drivers must pass periodic medical exams for licence validity.
If your C or D licence expires
These categories have a 5-year validity and require medical check-up.
If you transport dangerous goods (ADR)
ADR certification is mandatory for transporting hazardous materials.
If you hold a C1 licence
The C1 category covers medium goods vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes.
If you hold a C1E licence
C1E allows trailers over 750 kg if the combined weight does not exceed 12 tonnes.
If you hold a D1E licence
D1E extends D1 rights to include trailer combinations.
If driving a C or D vehicle for work
Professional use requires specific driver training and testing.
