Lane Discipline
- 1/30If driving steadily on a Finnish motorway
In Finland, the rightmost lane is for normal travel. Left lanes are reserved mainly for overtaking.
When two lanes merge with no signs
The zipper merge (vuorotellen) technique should be used to take turns merging into one lane.
If using the left lane on a dual carriageway
The left lane is intended for overtaking or when preparing to turn left.
If lanes are divided by a solid white line
Solid white lines indicate a strict separation of lanes no changing permitted.
If lanes are separated by a broken white line
A broken white line means drivers may change lanes when safe to do so.
When arrows point diagonally in your lane
Diagonal arrows are used to guide drivers to merge or change lanes safely.
If driving slowly in a tunnel
Slower vehicles are expected to stay in the far-right lane in tunnels.
If lane marking shows straight-and-right arrow
These arrows indicate optional directions from that lane.
If yellow zig-zag line is near a bus stop
Zig-zag markings indicate that stopping or parking is not allowed to keep the bus bay clear.
If BUS is marked on a lane during restrictions
BUS lanes are restricted for public transport and permitted users during set hours.
In highway fog conditions
Staying in the right lane improves predictability in low visibility.
If your lane ends ahead
Drivers must safely merge into the next lane and yield to ongoing traffic.
If you are alone in the left motorway lane
Always return to the right lane after overtaking on Finnish highways.
If changing lanes in Finland
Signaling with indicators is mandatory for all lane changes.
If arrows point both left and right in your lane
Dual-direction arrows give drivers the option to turn either left or right.
If crossing a solid lane marking
Solid lines can only be crossed when absolutely necessary.
When road narrows and merging is needed
When marked, drivers must alternate turns to merge smoothly.
If bicycle symbol is marked in a lane
Bicycle lanes are exclusively designated for cyclists.
If thick white line is before an intersection
A wide white line is a designated stopping line before an intersection or traffic signal.
If red cross appears above your lane
Red X above a lane signals that the lane is closed and must be vacated.
If temporary lane markings appear in construction
Temporary markings are legally binding and override normal road lines.
If overtaking a cyclist
You must leave at least 1.5 meters lateral space when overtaking cyclists.
If green arrow points down over your lane
A green arrow means the lane is open and usable.
If sign says Lane ends in 100m
Advance warning is given so drivers can safely merge in time.
If continuous yellow line runs along curb
A continuous yellow curb line means stopping is prohibited entirely.
If turning right at a roundabout
Use the outer (right) lane to take the first exit on a roundabout.
If turning left on a multi-lane road
Left turns must be made from the leftmost lane to ensure safety and flow.
If a vehicle is overtaking you on two-lane road
Keep your lane steady and do not obstruct the overtaking vehicle.
If broken line is on your side and solid on the other
You may cross the broken line to overtake if it is safe.
If two lanes become one with no signs
Drivers should merge alternately in turn when two lanes become one.
